Conference Attendee Information

Welcome to the 5th international Learning Analytics and Knowledge (LAK) Conference!

This web page will provide LAK attendees with important information regarding conference shuttles, area restaurants, dinner shuttles, taxi cabs, weather and other travel tips, and important safety information.  Once you arrive at the conference venue our Information Desk, located in the main conference hallway, will be able to provide additional assistance.  If you have questions before arriving please contact us at LAK@marist.edu.

NOTE: The registration desk will be open 7:30 a.m.–5:00 p.m. March 16–17, and 7:30 a.m.–12:00 noon March 18 just outside the entrance of the Nelly Goletti Theatre located in the Student Center (for room locations, see conference venue map).

Hotel and Dinner Shuttle Schedule

Free shuttles will be provided in the mornings and evenings to transport conference attendees between the official conference hotels and the main conference venue located at Marist College.  Shuttles will depart promptly at the times noted in the schedules below to ensure attendees arrive in time for conference events. Please be sure to board shuttles prior to listed departure times.

* - If you are departing for airports on Friday please remember to bring your luggage to Marist on Friday.  There will be a secure luggage storage area for you to use in MU 3202.

** - You MUST purchase tickets in advance for the Conference Dinner.  Tickets can be purchased online until March 10, 2015 and at the Registration Desk until Thursday (March 19th) afternoon.

Parking Information

If you are driving to the conference (see directions) you will be able to park for free on the Marist College Campus.  Please enter the campus through our South Entrance (see campus map) and make your first left into the McCann Recreational Center parking lot.  Campus Security is aware of the conference and thus you do not need a visitor pass nor do you need to check in with security.  All conference events will take place in the Marist Student Center which is #30 on the campus map.

Restaurant Suggestions

The LAK15 conference is taking place during Hudson Valley Restaurant Week (HVRW) which is an annual event during which top area restaurants offer "prix fixe" (price fixed) three-course dinners for $29.95 (US) and lunches for $20.95 (US) and often showcase dishes that use local produce and products.  This is a great opportunity for attendees to try out some of our best local restaurants at reduced rates.  You can find a list of Poughkeepsie-based participating restaurants on the HVRW web site.

NOTE: Because of Restaurant Week reservations are highly recommended.

In addition, here is a short list of additional restaurants in the area:

  • Restaurant's at the Culinary Institute of America - The CIA Restaurant Group is a family of unique restaurants that provide an array of culinary experiences, from modern French to farm-to-table and from authentic Italian to new global flavors. They are united by their common passion for culinary excellence and their relationship to the world-renowned Culinary Institute of America.
  • Shadows on the Hudson - Shadows on the Hudson is an award winning waterfront restaurant located in Poughkeepsie, NY. Our building is perched on a cliff 40 feet above the Hudson River and just 50 feet from its eastern bank. This prime location affords us one-of-a-kind, truly grand views of the Mid-Hudson Bridge to the north and miles of open river to the south.
  • Bluestone Bistro - Bluestone Bistro is Hudson Valley's newest best kept secret for affordable and delicious cuisine. Located on IBM Road, in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. Bluestone Bistro serves an eclectic menu in a casual and friendly atmosphere. Bluestone's Proprietor, Michael Polasek, is a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America and also proprietor of Simply Gourmet, which specializes in customized off site catering. Whether you are looking to sit and relax for lunch or dinner in the bistro, order take out, or have a customized event, we have you covered.  Bluestone Bistro participates in Hudson Valley Restaurant Week and is in walking distance of the Hampton Inn.
  • Cosimo's Brick Oven - Cosimo's takes pride in their commitment to consistency, quality, and dedication to meeting the expectations of each of their customers. Our Regional Tuscan fare with a New World twist is both traditional and innovative, featuring a variety of fresh ingredients and local Hudson Valley products. The casual yet sophisticated décor provides a comfortable atmosphere perfect for business lunches, entertaining friends and family, or enjoying an intimate night out with that special someone.  Cosimo's participates in Hudson Valley Restaurant Week.
  • If you are looking for something in walking distance of the Marist College Campus you will find, directly across Route 9: Applebees's, McDonalds, Quiznos (sandwich shop) and a Starbucks.

Tuesday and Wednesday Evening Dinner Shuttles

We are currently planning on providing limited free shuttle service on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings to the following restaurants: Shadows on the Hudson, Brasserie 292, Mill House Brewing Company, and the Artist's Palate.  Brasserie, Mill House and Artist's Palate are all participating in Hudson Valley Restaurant Week and will be providing discounted meals (see below for details).  Shuttle time are as follows:

Tuesday, March 17, 2015

  • Drop Off Schedule: Shuttles will depart official conference hotels promptly at 6:30 PM and arrive at Shadows on the Hudson at 6:45 PM and Brasserie, Mill House and Artist's Palate at 7:00 PM (these restaurants are right next to each other). 
  • Return Schedule: Shuttles will depart Shadows on the Hudson at promptly at 8:45 PM and the other restaurants at 9:00 PM to return attendees back to official conference hotels.

Wednesday, March 18, 2015

  • Drop Off Schedule: Shuttles will depart Marist College promptly at 7:45 PM and arrive at Shadows on the Hudson Brasserie, Mill House and Artist's Palate at 8:15 PM (these restaurants are right next to each other). 
  • Return Schedule: Shuttles will depart all restaurants promptly at 9:30 PM to return attendees back to official conference hotels

Taxi Cab Information

  • The following cab or taxi companies provide service from the train station to hotels.  Taxi cabs can take 15-20 minutes to arrive and please mention that you are with the LAK conference to receive a discount if you have more than one person in your party:

    • Your hotel will also be able to assist you in getting taxi cabs and may also be able to provide limit transportation via hotel vans.
  • Local taxi cabs may not accept credit cards, we recommend you have cash with you. 
  • TIPPING PROTOCOL: It is standard to provide taxi cab drivers who provide quality service with a 15-20% tip or gratuity upon arriving at your destination.

Attendee Travel Reminders and Recommendations

What to bring with you...

  • Weather Related Clothing - Although average temperatures in Poughkeepsie, New York during mid-March are generally around 48 F (10 C) the Northeast of the United States has been experiencing colder than usual temperatures this winter.  Thus, we are recommending that attendees bring a warm coat and clothes with them.  If you are planning to engage in any outdoor activities we would recommend bringing boots or hiking shoes.
  • Cables for Computer and other Devices - Please remember to bring any cables you need to charge electronic devices such as laptops, tablets or phones.  If you are presenting please be sure to bring the appropriate adapters/"dongles" to connect to standard VGA projectors.
  • Electrical Adaptors - The United States standardizes to 110V/60Hz for all electrical outlets.  If are traveling from outside the US, please be sure to bring the appropriate adaptor/converter to plug in to US outlets.  We will NOT be able to supply adaptors for attendees.
  • Time Zone and Daylight Savings Time - Poughkeepsie, New York is located in the Eastern Time Zone of the United States which is the same as New York City.  Please note that the United States will move onto Easter Daylight Savings Time on March 8, 2015.

SAFETY NOTE: Poughkeepsie has both rural and urban areas which, in some case, may not be safe at night and thus we would strongly recommend that attendees check-in with the Information Desk if you plan to explore areas outside of the Marist College campus.  In addition, for attendees who may be planning to visit the Shawangunk Mountains or The Gunks please be aware that there are extremely dangerous cliffs which should only be climbed by expert climbers or with experienced guides.

Key Attendee Information

  1. We will be providing free hotel and dinner shuttles.
  2. We highly recommend you eat breakfast at Marist to ensure you are not delayed getting to morning sessions.  A full hot breakfast will be provide Wednesday - Friday, continental breakfast will be provided Monday - Tuesday.
  3. LAK15 is taking place during Hudson Valley Restaurant Week which will allow you to sample top area restaurants at at reduced rates.
  4. Please review our important safety information as well as reminders on important things to bring
